Afghan National Team goes 2-3 in Taiwan's Hua Lien Kwen Fu Cup International Invitational |
by NBAA October 8, 2007 The ANT 2007 went 2-3 in the Hua Lien Kwen Fu Cup International hosted by the small Taiwanese city of Hua Lien. The team was greeted with warm Taiwanese fans whom attempted to take pictures with the Afghan National Team at every opportunity. The team responded well to the star struck crowd and signed autographs, stickers, shirts, and some cases even teenage crazed fans. The Team played a host of different professional and club teams. Their first game was a tough one losing a buzzer beater 69-70 on a half court shot from opposite team. However ANT bounced back and won the next game easily slaughtering their opponents. Team honors went to Bilal Aziz and Nafi Mashriqi who made their presence felt in the under-estimated ANT front court. Ali Noorzad and Yousof Etemadi, Farhad Nangialai also chipped with quality points in the second game as ANT prevailed with their 1st victory of the tournament. The ANT was coached by Mohammad Wamiq Rafiq in his first international debut as the head coach of the Afghan National Team. The head coach has inherited quite a team filled with much responsibilities as the new dawn arrives. Coach Mamo went 1-3 in his Las Vegas Tournament debut where it was more of a bonding period and getting acclimated with everyone's game on the team and knowing when to place people in the game and understanding each team members personality. The Afghan National Team highlights in the last game was when Yousof Etemadi drove baseline to the hole in the 4th quarter and the ball rolled off the rim. The opposite team went for the rebound and then Nafi Mashriqi flew in from the freethrow line grabbed the rebound and cock-banged the basketball on three opposing defenders. Head Coach of the Japanese Pro Team a new ANT fan, said this team is one to reckon with in the future in International play. The Afghan National Team will be touring in southern California in November for two-three weeks playing junior colleges and other local Universities. Coach Rafiq has set up a comprehensive schedule with local clubs, schools, and Universities. All Afghans in the Southern California should look in their local areas for the next time the Afghan National Team is coming to a University near. NBAA News Desk @ Copyright 2007
