The NBAA rejuvenates basketball in Kabul Public Park
| by NBAA October 11, 2007 | | | The NBAA has begun and aggressive plan to rejuvenate basketball in Afghanistan beginning with Kabul city. The NBAA has purchased, installed, and replaced the basketball backboards in Shahr Naw Park, in Kabul city behind City Center near the Safi Landmark Hotel. The NBAA hopes these new courts will bring some emphasis to the sport of basketball in this war torn country. The NBAA founder Naser Shahalemi said "Kabul and the entire country is hungry for change for the betterment of Afghan basketball throughout the country, and that is why the NBAA was established, hopefully this will be the 1st of many courts we plan on installing throughout the country". | |
| | The NBAA was met by its counter-part the ANABF/Afghan National Olympic Committee when unveiling the new basketball backboards to the disorganized Afghan National Amateur Basketball Federation in Kabul. The NBAA founder met the newly appointed Secretary General Mr. Gholam Ghous Nikbeen and he thanked the NBAA for its efforts to promote the sport in the war torn nation amongst all odds. The courts are attracting a new wave of athletes and the NBAA will inquire about having the court en-caged to preserve the courts for basketball alone once permission is granted by Kabul's City Hall. |
| The local Afghan youths also thanked the NBAA for the support, and agreed to register in the upcoming new league & camps in Kabul coming soon. The NBAA founder said "The goal is very precise, the growth of Afghan basketball is a must, and we must be resilient in our efforts because failure is un-acceptable. The NBAA was developed because there was a lack of emphasis of the sport of basketball even at the most basic levels. The increase of courts will increase participation in turn will create an ORA with the development of different teams, players and ultimately a successful growth spurt". The NBAA will begin trying a program where referees can be trained from Afghans in Afghanistan so the rules of play for the game can be | | | | understood better. You can catch the normal group of basketballers playing on Friday's at 8AM at the new courts playing on the new backboards. |
