Marching band to perform Afghanistan National Anthem

ARCATA -- Taking the notion that “No means find another way” to heart, Humboldt State Marching Lumberjacks alumnus Gordon Johnson tracked down and received a band arrangement of the newly created national anthem of the Republic of Afghanistan. With the help of the Afghanistan Embassy, the US Marine Corps and the office of our own Congressman Mike Thompson, Johnson was able get the extremely rare copies of the music from the only person in the United States that had them, Laura Lineburger, staff librarian of “Pershing's Own” United States Army Band. Not wanting to spark a diplomatic incident, the band was extremely careful in it's search for the proper version of the anthem. The current version was created for the new post-Taliban government in 2004. The band intends to perform the anthem to honor the Afghanistan national basketball team at the start of the exhibition game versus Humboldt State thursday night in the East Gym. To their knowledge, it is the only time the anthem has been performed by an American band outside of Washington D.C.
